A spectacular wildlife tour of Assam and Arunachal visiting five of the most exciting National Parks and Wildlife Sanctaries in India - Kaziranga, a World Heritage site and one of the best managed Parks in the world; Dibru-saikhowa, famous for its endemic wildlife; Eagles Nest Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area in the Himalayan foothills and a significant birding site; Nameri National Park, a paradise for bird watchers, and Manas another World Heritage site with wonderful landscapes and rare indigenous bird and animal life;
After arrival and a short time sightseeing in India's capital, Delhi, the tour starts in luxury with a stay in a bungalow in a tea estate at Dibrugarh. From here a whole day is spent birding and wildlife watching along the Dibru river at Dibrusaikhowa National Park, a biodiversity hotspot and Tiger Reserve where 350 species of bird and 26 species of mammals have been recorded. Some of the important birds of this area are Marsh Babbler, Jordon's Babbler, Black-breasted Parrot bill, Swamp Prinia and Jordon's Bush chat. Important mammals include the six species of primates, seven species of cats, such as tiger, leopard, leopard cat, clouded leopard, golden cat, fishing cat and jungle cat. It is also home for the Indian elephant, Asiatic wild buffalo and feral horse.
The next stop is Kaziranga which, with its swamps and tall thickets of elephant grass, make it the ideal habitat for the Indian one-horned rhino and an elephant safari here is a fantastic experience. Other major wildlife attractions include a large population of Indian elephants, Indian bison, swamp deer (barasingha), hog deer, sloth bear, tiger, leopard cat, jungle cat, otter, hog badger, capped langur, Hoolock gibbon, wild boar, jackal, wild buffalo, pythons, monitor lizards, etc. It's also a birding paradise as the grasslands are raptor country with species such as the oriental honey buzzard, black-shouldered kite, Brahminy kite, Pallas's fishing eagle and white tailed eagle soaring in the thermal currents.
After three days' camping with spectacular birdwatching and wildlife viewing at Eagles Nest with its extraordinary variety, number and accessibility of birds such as Temminkc's tragopan, Ward's trogon, the beautiful nuthatch and newly discovered bugun liocichla together with wildlife such as elephant, tigers, leopards, sambars, serows, gorals and red panda, the tour moves on to Nameri National Park which is excellent elephant country and the ideal habitat for a host of other animals including tiger, leopard, bison, dhole (Asiatic wild dog), Himalayan black bear, Malayam giant squirrel as well as over 300 species of birds including the white winged wood duck and four distinct species of hornbill.
The finale is time on jungle safaris in Manas national Park which is home to by far the greatest number of endangered and protected wildlife in the country and the best place to see rare species such as the Assam roofed turtle, Golden langur, Hispid hare, pygmy hog and the pure strain of Asiatic wild buffalo. It also provides the ideal habitat for many birds and Manas boasts the largest population of the endangered Bengal florican in the world and is also a great place to see other birds such as the great hornbill, greater adjutant, black-tailed crake, red-headed trogon, swamp francolin, wreathed and rufous-necked hornbill, marsh and Jerdon's babblers, pied harrier, rufous-rumped and bristled grassbirds, Hodgson's bushchat, rufous-vented laughing thrush, Finn's weaver, ibisbill and a variety of foothills species. Then it's time to travel back to Delhi with enduring memories and, hopefully, many photographs! |
