The main threats to India's endangered species are loss of habitat and deforestation due to the increasing demand for land by local inhabitants together with poaching - huge sums of money can be made from selling carcasses to countries such as China, Korea and Japan where body parts are used as aphrodisiacs and medicines - although poaching can never be condoned, the temptation is understandable due to the poverty still prevalent in much of rural India. Tourism provides income and positive feedback that acts as an incentive for local people to protect and conserve their natural environment and combat such poaching, making it worthwhile for them to help protect the habitat of India's endangered species and their own heritage.
