By promoting tourism within the local communities it is possible, in fact desirable, to have one of the most amazing experiences of your life - seeing tigers and other rare and endangered wildlife such as the one-horned rhino, Asian lion and Siberian crane in the wild - while at the same time having the satisfaction of knowing you are helping the conservation of these beautiful but sadly increasingly rare animals. The main threats to India's endangered species are loss of habitat and deforestation due to the increasing demand for land by local inhabitants together with poaching - huge sums of money can be made from selling carcasses to countries such as China, Korea and Japan where body parts are used as aphrodisiacs and medicines - although poaching can never be condoned, the temptation is understandable due to the poverty still prevalent in much of rural India. Tourism provides income and positive feedback that acts as an incentive for local people to protect and conserve their natural environment and combat such poaching, making it worthwhile for them to help protect the habitat of India's endangered species and their own heritage.
