‘Have one of the most amazing experiences of you life!!!!’ declaims the brochure: and we did. This company delivers exactly what it says.
Our Tiger Trip itinerary was an inspired masala of game drives and bird watching; history, anthropology and culture. We were mesmerised by close encounters with Bengal Tigers in their ecosystems, in both Kanha and Ranthambhore National Parks. The rich biodiversity of Central India is infinitely photogenic, not least because unexpectedly, the mammals and birds do not take flight at the approach of humankind. We took nearly two thousand photographs!
Temples, mosques, forts, palaces; trains, cars, tuk-tuks, rickshaws, elephants; Mughal Emperors, iconic world heritage sites and the Raj; poor rural villages, beggars and savvy cities: all were woven into the dynamic tapestry of our fortnight’s brief encounter with twenty-first century India.
We opted for a personal tour- guide for the whole fortnight. Apart from his encyclopaedic knowledge of all wildlife, especially birds, Harish was variously our interpreter; interlocutor; health and safety expert; Delhi-belly pharmacist; stress-buster and general Mr Fixit, from hot water to hot water bottles! Nothing was beyond his ken and he glued together the schedule seamlessly ensuring our total relaxation.
Accommodation was always en-suite, clean and well-presented. However, idiosyncratic plumbing sometimes needed a bucket-booster!
Plentiful and flavoursome food was locally sourced (no food miles here) and freshly cooked, with dinner and sometimes lunch, in buffet style. Learn to love hard-boiled eggs in packed lunches though.
We are left feeling really positive about this holiday. Savage India tapped us into local sustainable economies which are supported by and in turn support the continuance of the National parks and their wildlife. Thank you Savage India. We shall use you again.
