India has a huge diversity of habitats and is home to more than 500 species of mammal an over 1300 species of bird so is a must for wildlife enthusiasts. One of the main reasons for coming to India is to see tigers in the wild. Savage India's wildlife itineraries include plenty of safaris in different National Parks (Tiger Reserves), Animal Sanctuaries and Bird Reserves so the chance of seeing tigers and other endangered species such as the one-horned rhino is excellent although of course a sighting can never be guaranteed. However the early morning and late afternoon jeep and elephant safaris offer the opportunity to see a wealth of other wildlife - such as herds of wild elephant, leopards, nilgai (India's largest antelope), sambar deer, chittal (spotted) deer, sloth bears, the ubiquitous common langur monkeys, striped hyenas, jackals, jungle cats, wild boar, crocodiles - the list goes on.
For birders there is everything from majestic eagles to tiny purple sunbirds. You could see white-breasted kingfishers, pied kingfishers, painted stork, spoonbill, demoiselle cranes, white Ibis, Indian roller, paradise flycatcher, golden oriole or even the rare Siberian crane overwintering in India - there are too many possibilities to mention here. Every game drive is action packed and thrilling - and often completely exhilarating as your jeep follows the sound of a spotted deer's alarm call and you patiently wait with bated breath until a tiger pads through the undergrowth in front of you or nonchalantly passes within feet of your jeep!
